The Cheapest Line You Can Add to Your ERAS

Ten minutes and a small fee can add a line to your ERAS application today. It is the lowest-effort, highest-signal move I give my students, and most discover it a year too late.

What a membership gives you

Professional memberships are low-cost, and often free or discounted for students and trainees. They give you three things at once:

  1. A line on your application that shows investment in your specialty

  2. Access to journals and webinars you can reference in interviews

  3. Entry to the conferences, virtual fairs, and open houses where networking happens

Which organization to join

Two formatting rules

  • Spell it out. Write the full organization name, then the abbreviation in parentheses. A reviewer from another specialty may not know your acronym.

  • Include everything relevant. Home-country medical associations, specialty societies, and diaspora physician groups are part of your professional story too.

Your action step today

Join your specialty's national organization. Add the line to ERAS. Then use the membership: sign up for its events, because those are where programs meet you before September.
