As an IMG preparing for the USMLE, you may have concerns about the recent changes to Step 1 scoring, which has shifted from a numeric score to pass/fail. This change has both advantages and disadvantages, especially for IMGs who need to demonstrate their competitiveness in the match process.

Previously, Step 1 scores were used as a triage point by program directors to filter out less desirable applicants and attract the kind of applicants they wanted for their program. IMGs could use their Step 1 scores to showcase their competitiveness and set themselves apart from other applicants. However, with the transition to pass/fail scoring, IMGs may lose the opportunity to demonstrate their exceptional performance on Step 1.

To counter this potential disadvantage, one effective strategy is to focus on obtaining a high score on Step 2. Step 2 scores may become the new filtering criteria for program directors and can be used to showcase your clinical knowledge and skills. In fact, specialties such as Internal Medicine have always placed a high value on Step 2 scores, as they require applicants to have specific clinical expertise.

While Step 2 scores may become more important, other aspects of your application, such as volunteering, research, and observerships, are still crucial. To effectively prepare for the USMLE while managing your busy life, you can consider enrolling in my six-week coaching course, IMG Roadmap. The course provides expert guidance on how to master the USMLE steps and equips you with the tools you need to match successfully on your first attempt.

One of the benefits of the course is the opportunity to connect with study partners who share similar goals, which can help you prepare more efficiently. The course also emphasizes the importance of question banks as a key preparation strategy for the USMLE, and you only need to dedicate 2-4 hours a week for six weeks, making it manageable alongside your other commitments. In fact, time management and prioritization are important topics discussed in the course.

As you consider whether to join the upcoming April cohort, I invite you to check out a free resource at DrNinaLum.com/webinar, where you can learn about the worst pitfalls to avoid during the match process. Coaching enrollment is now open, starting on April 23rd with orientation on April 17th. Don't just take my word for it, visit DrNinaLum.com/testimonials to hear what past students have to say about the course. Their reviews may surprise you!

Remember, while the changes to Step 1 scoring may seem daunting, with the right strategies and preparation, you can still showcase your competitiveness and successfully match into your desired residency program.
