Let’s say it plainly:
Not matching does not mean you are unqualified.

It means there were fewer seats than applicants.

That’s it.

If you are an IMG preparing for Match Week, you need to understand the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) — not fear it.

Because SOAP is not chaos.
It is structured.
And it rewards preparation.

First: Why SOAP Exists

SOAP was created to eliminate the old “scramble” system.

It prevents side deals, protects fairness, and creates structured offer rounds so unmatched applicants have access to unfilled positions.

It is not random.

It is regulated.

And if you prepare properly, you can move through it strategically.

Who Is Eligible for SOAP?

You must:

  • Be registered for the Match

  • Be unmatched or partially matched

  • Be eligible to begin residency July 1

  • Not have withdrawn from the Match

If you don’t meet these criteria, you cannot participate.

The Truth About Not Matching

When I coach IMGs, I tell them this:

If you received interviews, you are qualified.

The main reasons people don’t match often include:

  • Limited number of positions

  • Specialty competitiveness

  • Visa limitations

  • Interview distribution patterns

Not a lack of worth.

The SOAP Timeline:

Monday: You find out if you matched.
Tuesday–Wednesday: Programs review + interview.
Thursday: Four offer rounds.
Each round gives you two hours to respond.

You must be ready emotionally and logistically.

How To Prepare NOW

1. Upgrade Your Personal Statement

If you got feedback, revise it.

2. Add Strong Letters of Recommendation

You can still upload new LORs.

3. Maximize Your Applications

Historically, applicants can apply to up to 45 SOAP programs. Use them wisely.

4. Build Your Support System

You may need:

  • An editor with strong English skills to help you optimise your LORs, personal statements and other documents if needed

  • Emotional support

  • Someone to help you to prepare your meals

  • Childcare if needed

  • A lighter rotation schedule or time off from work if you are working

Prepare Emotionally

Write affirmations.
Record a message to yourself.
Have scripture or grounding statements ready.

Because SOAP is mentally intense.

The Biggest Mistake People Make

They prepare their application.

But they don’t prepare themselves.

And Thursday becomes overwhelming.

Strategy without stability is dangerous.

If You Think You Might SOAP…

Listen to my interview with  Dr. Emmanuel Morakinyo (Episode #54). He prepared for SOAP in advance and approached it strategically.

Preparation begins months before Match Week.

Not on Monday at 11:05 AM.
