J-1 or H-1B on ERAS? Select Both.
One checkbox disqualifies more IMGs than any exam score. Programs run visa filters before a human ever opens your file. If your visa selection does not match what a program offers, you are removed before review begins.
The mistake smart applicants make
I watch it every cycle. An applicant hears that H-1B is better because there is no two-year home-return requirement. So they select only H-1B. Then they apply to 80 programs, and 90 percent of those programs only sponsor J-1.
The filter removes them instantly. Nobody ever reads their name. They paid thousands of dollars to apply to programs that structurally could not take them.
J-1 vs. H-1B at a glance
My rule
If you are not 100 percent certain which visa you want, select both J-1 and H-1B. You decide later, when real offers are on the table. Selecting both keeps every door open until you know what you have.
A visa policy is not a judgment of you
When a program does not sponsor your visa, it is not rejecting you. Sponsorship is an institutional decision made above the program. It reflects infrastructure, not your worth.
I trained on a J-1 myself. It was not the end of the world. If your goal is to start residency, the more widely available path may be your advantage.
