US IMGs, Stop Hiding Your Biggest Advantage
US IMGs bury their biggest competitive advantage every single cycle. I coach both visa-requiring and US IMGs, and the way each should play the work authorization section is completely different.
See it from the coordinator's chair
Two similar files land on a coordinator's desk. One needs visa sponsorship: paperwork, institutional approval, timelines. The other says citizen or permanent resident, no sponsorship needed.
One of those files just got lighter. That is not discrimination. It is logistics, and logistics influence decisions.
The modesty mistake
Most US IMGs mention their status once, in one dropdown, and never again. Meanwhile that single fact removes an entire burden from the program's side, and nobody notices it.
If you do not need sponsorship, lead with it:
In your geographic preference explanation boxes
In your personal statement
In every networking email to programs
Use the exact words: "I require no visa sponsorship."
Other work authorization statuses
Adjustment of status or EAD: select accurately. Programs want to know your authorization is stable for the full 3 to 7 years of training.
DACA: select accurately and research each program's policy individually.
F-1 OPT or other student status: indicate it and be ready to explain your timeline at interview.
Whatever your status, stability is what programs read for. Present yours clearly and confidently.
