Happy New Year from the IMG Roadmap to you! This episode features a webinar that was held to help IMGs like you plan their successful IMG journeys for the following year. Keep listening and feel free to do the exercises yourself!

What are three things that you were proud of last year?

  • Did you achieve medical related goals such as passing the USMLE or getting ECFMG certified?

  • Did you run a half-marathon?

  • Did you have a child or start a business?

  • Did you learn how to swim?

  • Did you figure out your finances to move to the US?

  • Did you complete any electives or observerships?

  • Did you overcome your mental health struggles?

What is one goal that you set for yourself in 2022 but did not end up achieving?

  • Did you not pass step 1?

  • Did you not take step 2?

  • Did you not apply for the match?

Why did you not complete this goal? Honesty and Introspection are key!

  • Are you afraid of failure?

  • Did you lack the knowledge?

  • Were you not motivated enough?

Pivoting from this, how can you plan to achieve all of your goals in 2023?

You may not have realized it, but you’ve just completed a SWOT analysis: You identified your Strengths (What you accomplished last year), Weaknesses (What you didn’t accomplish), Opportunities (How you can plan for 2023) and Threats (Why you didn’t accomplish your goals from last year).

The best advice is to cancel motivation and take action in the direction of the results you want to see.

Write out 3 things you want to achieve this year:

  • Do you want to complete all your Step exams in one year?

  • Do you want to present a poster? Complete observerships?

  • Do you want to match in 2024?

Let’s separate your goals into bite-size pieces:

  • Identify the specialty you want to get into then secure electives through networking.

  • Buy your Question-bank and divide it into the number of questions you can do per day.

  • Do an NBME to know where your medical knowledge stands.

  • Network and use Google to find observerships.

  • Use free resources from OET (Occupational English Test) website if you plan to take this exam.

  • Find an interesting case that you were involved in and write a case report.

Break your three new goals into actionable steps that you can accomplish throughout the first quarter of the year and then repeat these steps for the remaining quarters!
